The Cool Girl’s Guide to Brooches
Why brooches are the easiest way to make your outfit interesting and an extensive edit

When I started this newsletter, I promised myself I’d write about whatever my heart desired. I didn’t want to be pigeonholed into any one subject. But after countless hours writing, week after week, I have begun to feel the pressure to niche down. Art and design are the natural choice; it’s what I do, after all. But I’m resisting the urge, and sticking with my original instinct: to follow curiosity wherever it leads. So, today’s story? It’s about fashion (but also, kind of, art). Specifically: the brooch.
When I see someone wearing a brooch, irl, I immediately know they’re cool. It gives a bit of grandma, but she’s French and owns a gallery vibe. A brooch signals creativity, personal style, and just enough playful irreverence to keep things interesting. I love a clean, minimal look as much as the next girl (especially as a working mom with no time to get ready), but it can easily veer into “blah” territory if it isn’t done right. Accessories are the key, the quickest way to inject personality and charm. And brooches? They are the most fun of all. Tiny sculptures you can wear. Little bursts of whimsy that instantly elevate whatever you’ve got on. They are my go-to.
The other day, I was chatting with an exceptionally chic founder of a well-known accessories brand, and brooches came up. She admitted she didn’t think people wore them, and wasn’t quite sure how to style one herself. I was shocked (cue the audible gasp). So naturally, I had to do something about it.
Here’s my guide to styling brooches—the easiest way to make your outfit (and your day) a little more interesting. Already know how to style them, but looking for an edit of fun vintage options? I’ve got you covered. Scroll to the bottom.
The Blazer Lapel
The easiest way to style a brooch, especially if, like me, a blazer is your go-to for work. This can tend to lean towards grandma (not in the cool way), so I suggest doubling up, or going with something large or avant-garde.

The Blazer Clasp
Looks best with a one or no-button blazer.

The Scarf
A scarf is another of my go-tos for adding interest to a minimal outfit. My favorites are JKG. A scarf + a brooch is a bonus.

The Jacket
Another super-easy way to wear a brooch. I try to create some contrast between the jacket and the brooch - if the jacket is vintage (like this Issey Miyake from he 80s), I’ll go with a modern-looking brooch.

The Top Button
A bigger brooch works better for this look, and you can use it for a button-down shirt or a jacket.

The Dress Cinch
This is a great way to add some shape and draping to an otherwise simple dress. I also love this with a skirt.
The Sweater Cinch
Want to instantly shorten a sweater? Add a brooch.

The Sweater Clasp
A sweater around my shoulder is a go-to for a layered look. Adding a brooch just makes it a bit less preppy and more interesting.

The Maximalist Canadian Tux
Denim on denim is always chic and comfortable, but it’s also not exactly super individual. The solution: add ALL the brooches.

ALL THE COOLEST BROOCHES:
I scoured the depths of the internet to uncover the coolest vintage brooches—playful, unexpected little gems that are perfect for adding a spark of personality. If you are looking for something new, I suggest Zoe Mohm, Janie Kruse Garnet, Justine Menard, or Schiaparelli. Do you know any artists making really cool brooches? Let me know:
